About this deal

On my device this cause a ‘tug of war’ - as pressure of the second finger increases, the aftertouch value from the first finger starts to fall. NothanUmber I’ve perused the memory blocks on the modules and I’m seeing something resembling an XML structure or at least sets of nested parameters. I hoped it was just a firmware issue but when I asked on the official forum that they used to run years ago, they said it was a sensor limitation.

The keys pad is particularly interesting because it lets you press and hold a note, then run up and down the other keys to create glides, sweeps and other cool effects. You know, this honestly doesn’t sound like a sensor issue as much as a firmware issue on how it calculates pressure. With the original Joue Im not sure if they ever released even a single firmware update for it during its lifetime, I know the software editor got updated sometimes but not sure the firmware ever did.Again, I am sure touchscreen libraries have functions to deal with this exact issue, but I don’t feel like learning an entirely different codebase to make a MIDI script. If the range was a little wider I might be able to know for sure, but I don’t have enough dexterity yet to be certain of my input. The device is versatile, allowing numerous configurations combining keyboard and MIDI controllers, and it is eminently playable as well, although the vibrato response can be a little difficult to master. The Pro option turns the Joué Play into an expressive and modular MPE MIDI controller that reacts like a real instrument. Yes, I checked and there are effectively 4 horizontal strips and 12+ vertical strips that record aftertouch, based on the dimensions of the matrix pad.

The MPE controller is accessible to beginners but is a powerful tool to help experienced musicians create new patterns, with an additional editor app for deeper control. A preset scale can be selected (there are 23 to choose from), and vibrato (left-right glide), Y position (slide) and aftertouch are all supported. I found the infinite encoder emulation more useful, and that comes with a speed multiplier setting depending on the accuracy you desire. And then, I guess you’d set those to MPE, each with a unique range of five channels so they don’t clobber each other? I’ve been running the board the the RPI on a 5000mah battery for the last 3 hours without the charge dropping so this seems like a great thing to DIY.The silicone modules afford some 'give' when pressed, making the surface a bit more haptic than the Sensel Morph, but with a lot less movement than a ROLI Seaboard. Activate the MPE function on your Joué Play and modulate all MIDI parameters simultaneously with natural gestures. Download the free Play app for Mac, PC or iOS, and when you connect the board to your device, it loads up the relevant set of instruments for the pad you have fitted. Of course, if you get a Re-connect then you can plug in any old MIDI wireless host but I’m not brave enough to take mine apart. The buttons on the keyboard modules are assumed to be mapped to MIDI channel select, so that you can flip instantly between two instruments.

The controller modules worked well, especially the bubbles, but without visual indication of state, the various octave and mode buttons felt less useful. The soundpack contains 10 presets, ranging from guitar-with-effects patches to traditional instruments (Cymbalum, Koto), and Workstation allows effects processing to be tweaked according to taste. Since the projects are routing MIDI by channel, they don't attempt to make use of MPE (which is only a loss for Bitwig, since Live doesn't support MPE anyway), so if you want to adapt these projects as a starting point you'll need to turn off MPE for any modules you want to use. Switch pads on the fly to instantly transform your Joue Play into a guitar, piano, drums or keyboard and explore their assigned sound banks. The Joué is a slim block measuring some 36cm wide and 14cm deep, and appears to be milled out of a solid block of wood, though in fact a cursory glance at the underside reveals that it's constructed from panels glued together with almost hermetic precision. What is even more annoying is pressing hard will completely blow out the other notes aftertouch data, so with each note, you have to press lighter and lighter to not blow out their output.
