Yousaf is an up and coming author; I followed him from Instagram and was ecstatic to see he published a poetry book. Cullhed dramatises the episode where Plath rides the horse Ariel for the first time just after Hughes has left her, displeasing the stable girl by galloping, unhelmeted, away from the paddock. I don't regret reading because there were some poems (probably between 25-50%) that were really nice and made clear sense.

At times, the sadness is overwhelming but the collection is carried by the ambition to find and occupy a space between sadness and joy, to a least temporarily balance the scales of contemporary life.

A quote I enjoyed was “There are times when I wanted the worst for you, Hoping you would understand The roots of my thoughts.

This was so beautiful and calming and so in depth to feelings we choose not to acknowledge on a daily basis. The poems are dedicated to mental illness, love, personal experiences, and growing up as a first-generation immigrant in America. He is currently writing his first novel, and this his first, but hopefully not last, collection of poetry. I wrote until my insides were hollowed out, until all of me felt like my body was an arch that threw my soul out like the kind of innards that would lurch into a toilet. It becomes clear here that the real question is about freedom: how much freedom should anyone have to take, how much can they bear? The poems in Euphoria take your breath away with their depth of vision, passion of thought, and beauty of expression. Now that her husband’s freedom has shown itself also to be crushingly banal, Plath has to work out her own sense of what freedom is. He started writing when he was younger, and has since fallen in love with all kinds of different poetry that the world has to offer. Más que poemas son pensamientos fraccionados, que en ocasiones se leen como tuits y en ocasiones como tarjetas Hallmark.

This may sound excessive quoted out of context, but Cullhed succeeds in showing the miraculousness of creation: the move from a blank page to something and the gradual understanding of what this something is.

I looked around on the internet and could not find a good translation from the German so I wrote one myself that retains both pretty well if anyone is interested. Think of the poem Nick and the Candlestick, in which Plath, walking with a candlestick to her son’s bedroom, becomes a miner alongside “waxy stalactites”, the baby’s room a womb exuding “black bat airs”.

The freedom that Hughes is seeking is the freedom to evade his responsibilities as a father and have an affair with Assia Wevill. Plath is interrupted by a crow – an avatar for Hughes – but she carries on, and in doing so comes to a new realisation about how she, “a young, beautiful promise”, was used to “cover up the rotten, the dead”. Through simple and relatable statements and poems, I found that Yousaf was able to play delicately with my heart. At first I felt this book was a little slow paced and simple, but sticking with it showed me how amazing it was. we'll he's not exactly a good dude so there could be more to this poem (and why would choosing to breathe would be 1.
