About this deal

Simply put, if you want to push to your maximum potential on Zwift, you need good airflow around your body. Because sweating isn’t the goal… power to the pedals is!

Instead, note that Elite says you should aim for replacing the filters (there is one per side) every 500 hours, and that a set of replacement filters is 15EUR (includes two filters) – which seems pretty darn reasonable to me, especially for something you’d likely do every 1-2 years. When the 500 hours of time has passed, the Aria fan will warn you with a flashing red light (but will otherwise function normally). Replacing the filters is relatively easy, you’ll just unscrew the four screws on the side of the fan frame, to pull it out: Ultimately, at this point Elite wins on virtually every feature category except the ability to use the Wahoo bike computers/watch for control – or other apps for control of the fan. But I think almost everyone is gonna either use the built-in app or sensor-driven control. Wrap-Up: Humans are great at thermoregulation compared to other species. However, the body’s capacity to lose heat is not unlimited and at a certain point these processes are unable to match the accumulation of heat during exercise which can ultimately lead to mild hyperthermia or even severe heat exhaustion. Dave Bailey – WorldTour performance consultant.Actually, that’s not quite true, I got it for Christmas from my wife. That’s right, I have given my permission for her to take paid employment.

I bought (requested the buying of) the Vacmaster some nine months into my indoor cycling journey. Until that point, I’d been using a cheap (I assume) desktop fan that makes more noise than air movement. After opening it up, you’ll find the fan sandwiched between some protective cardboard. From there, simply lift it up, remove the plastic, and…well…almost done.

A good fan is essential for indoor riding, but what makes a fan good? We put several through a series of tests to find out which one is right for you.

This is the first post in a series covering recommended accessories for new Zwifters. Today, we’re talking about the first accessory any Zwifter needs: a fan! Why is a fan so important? Because without one you’ll overheat, causing your body to throttle down your power so you can’t perform at your best. The rate at which water leaves through the drain corresponds to the heat transfer to the environment. Wahoo fan can also be controlled by Wahoo ELEMNT bike computers, as well as Wahoo watches, and even a handful of 3rd party apps Wahoo has a nice place to wrap the power cord around it, whereas Elite’s power cord detaches – albeit also technically wraps around the side of the filter circle as well for storage

As you can see from the above, the main areas they connect with are covered by both companies (trainers, heart rate sensors, speed sensors). However, if you have a heart rate sensor that’s Bluetooth only, then only the Elite fan can connect to that. Likewise, Wahoo’s fan can’t connect to the CORE body temperature sensor either. Inversely, Wahoo’s fan can be controlled by their bike computers and watches, and a few smaller 3rd party apps. Is this what cycling has come to, paying for headwinds? All joking aside, the Wahoo Headwind includes several trainer-friendly features. The Headwind is a centrifugal type fan, with all the wind-generating parts hidden inside. The fan has no visible or external moving blades or parts. The high-speed airflow from the tall forward-facing vent is immediately impressive, especially if you are coming from smaller desk fans. To collect the data I used six core temperature sensors provided by Core for the purposes of this analysis. While designed to continuously measure core body temperature, the Core sensor is also suitable for measuringtheeffectiveness of insulating or cooling properties of clothing.

Starting with the most obvious results, Zahner found the data clearly shows using any fan is much better than no fan. Zahner looked at the average energy transfer for the final 10-minute periods of each test. The average energy transfer (flux) is the measure of how much energy is leaving the body in each test. In contrast to skin temperature and heart rate, energy transfer is much less sensitive to fluctuations in ambient temperature. The higher the average energy transfer bar the better the cooling. On average, the use of a fan led to 52% higher heat dissipation from the body than not using a fan. The testing involved six 30-minute test rides, with the sensors set to record throughout, both on and off the bike. The energy transfer and temperature increases during each test are clear to see in the results. Wrangling the Cardio54 is so simple, it hardly warrants a section. But sure, I’ll throw a few words at it.

This impressive 240V, 30 litre L Class Industrial Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner is powered by a 1400W motor, delivering 191 Air Watts and generating a maximum airflow of 68 L/s and 24 kpa vacuum pressure. Designed with safety in mind, simply engage the Push Clean Filter System to restore maximum suction power and ensure the safe extraction of hazardous dusts. Yes, the Headwind adapts automatically, but I prefer to adjust the speed manually and touchscreens do not play ball with my sweaty paws. Better yet, if the airflow distribution is a concern, I dare suggest setting up two Cardio54s in front and to the side of the trainer could provide even better airflow and still only match the price of the Wahoo. Given the heat transfer coefficient shows not how much heat I have built up but rather how well I am dissipating heat, it should provide a more indicative quantity to estimate the “cooling potential” of each fan/test. Zahner likened the heat transfer coefficient to pouring water into a sink and the rate at which the water can drain. When training indoors, we want, as much as possible, to replicate the same cooling airflow we get over the body when riding outdoors. Training in a well-ventilated area with a lower room temperature is key in creating conditions in which the body can perform adequately. In combination with the right fan, these ambient conditions can make a world of difference to your indoor training comfort and effectiveness. So if you do detect any bias, it is the profound emotional response to my beloved buying me a gift… which was in no way precisely the thing I specified she buy because she’d run out of ideas. The Benefits of a Fan Whence Indoor Cycling Personally, I just prefer it to be always-on, at a non-hurricane strength. But everyone is different.
