Description

Similar to the surveyors tape in the first place, this product is made from an ergonomic plastic that is perfect for surveyors tape and is lightweight and robust. It doesn’t feel cheap and only costs middle money, so if you’re wanting surveyors tape for more casual use, especially around the garden or in building jobs, this is ideal for you. Its tape is made from fibreglass and has a hook on the end, which can be a pain if you’re only measuring flat ground but is typically useful in the garden. It retracts easily and is simple to use, so it has all that you need. The design is a bit different to other products in this list, as it has a smaller rotary handle and is smaller in general, as well as being compact to make it foldable for storage purposes. It’s got a sleek design and feels highly ergonomic too. The tape itself is fibreglass material and is washable too, so it’s ideal for outdoor use. Winding and rewinding is simple and smooth and really, it doesn’t have any negatives when considering structural or functional features at all.

If you need to take very accurate measurements with a tape measure, then the invar tape is the most accurate of all measuring tapes. Finally, if you’re not sure what tape suits your requirements try our Online Tape Assistant or ask a question on online chat for advice from our knowledgeable team, many of whom have extensive surveying and engineering experience.

Cloth tape, also known as Linen tape is a varnished strip made of closely woven linen. The width of the strip is about 12 to 16 mm. It is available in different lengths such as 10m, 20m, 30m, and 50m. Both ends of the linen tape are provided with metallic handles and the whole tape is wounded in leather or metal case. A lot of Land Surveyors prefer a Linen Tape because Linen tapes are light in weight and easy to handle. These tapes may shrink when exposed to water and also elongate when pulled. Hence, these tapes are not suitable for accurate surveying measurements. These are generally used for measuring offsets and for ordinary works.

Fibreglass tapes can come in a variety of sizes, from as short as 5 meters, all the way up to 100 meters. A 30-meter fiberglass measuring tape. Cloth & Linen Tapes Hook types vary significantly from one manufacturer and model to another but, on the whole, a surveyor's tape will use a metal (frequently coated or stainless steel) hook that folds away for safety whilst extended to hook around an item or anchor into the ground. An integral part of any surveyors’ tape is the hook. The size and shape of hook can vary significantly from one model to another depending on the manufacturer, but a surveyors’ tape will almost always incorporate a foldable metal hook to anchor the tape into soft ground when taking measurements with a level. The coefficient of thermal expansion of invar alloy is very low. It is not affected by changes in temperature. Hence, these tapes are used for high precision works in surveying such as baseline measurement, triangulation surveys, etc. Invar tapes are expensive than all the other types of tapes. These tapes should be handled with care otherwise bends or kinks may be formed.

Synthetic tapes used in Land Surveying are made of glass fibers coated with PVC. These are light in weight and flexible. They are available in lengths of 5m, 10m, 20m, 30m, and 50m. Synthetic tapes may stretch when subjected to tension. Hence, these are not suitable for accurate surveying works. However, synthetic tapes are recommended in place of steel tapes where it is essential to take measurements in the vicinity of electric fences and railway lines, etc.Metal measuring tapes can be either flexible or non-flexible. If you try and measure a curved surface with a non-flexible tape measure you will likely permanently damage the tape. Also if exposed to moisture or retracted with dirt on the tape, this can cause the tape to corrode and affect the recall of the tape. Since you’re going to be outdoors using this item, most likely in the rain and cold if in England, you want it to be comfortable. Most surveying tapes are made from basic plastics such as ABS which are perfectly comfortable, so consider the material. Rubber casing is always ideal too which the HKB ® 1 piece measuring tape has.

With open reel tapes the blade is encased in an open frame and you can actually see the blade. Open reels make for easier cleaning and are lightweight and easy to transport if your job routinely involves you walking long distances over rough terrain. For those of you who need accurate measurements, whether it be in the garden or for construction purposes, sometimes a basic tape measure isn’t enough. They can be a bit flimsy to use and easily bend/move when moved, so they can actually end up being a real pain. If this sounds like a relatable issue, or if your tape measure just won’t cover a certain job you need to get done, then surveyors tape is for you and this review covers all you need to know about them. Read on for the latest trade insights, national news stories and product updates that affect our customers. As well as this, if you’re really not fussed or you’re not sure what you’re going to be using your tape for, a 50m is always a good compromise. If you don’t need to worry about money though, then perhaps it’s worth investing in a 100m tape because, well, why not? It might come in handy. Ergonomics You're also getting superior flexibility too... it goes without saying that, when you hit thirty metres, you're all out of measuring! A fifty metre model obviously gives a whole load more length and, with such a minimal price differential, why not cover all bases and go longer?A woven metallic tape is an improved version of linen tape. Brass or copper made wires are used as reinforcement for the linen material. Hence, it is more durable than normal linen tape. A brass ring is provided at the end of the tape which is included in the length of the tape. Woven metallic tapes are are available in different lengths of 2m, 10m, 15m, 20m, 30m, and 50m. These are used for survey works such as topographical survey works where minor errors are not taken into consideration. Surveyors tapes come with a range of blade materials ideal for different purposes. Fibreglass is the most common material used for long tape blades due to its durability, accuracy and, crucially, its resistance to water, tearing and stretching. But steel surveyors tapes are still very popular and far better suited to certain applications. Surveyors tapes are even available in stainless steel although not many manufacturers offer such products. Only you will know which one's right for you! These are not common measuring tapes and personally, I have never seen another surveyor use one of these in the field. The only time I have actually seen one of these is in my Dad’s toolbox, which was given to him by his father. Steel and stainless steel tapes are also extremely popular with land surveyors but are better suited to certain applications than others.
