About this deal

With this information, Laurel confronts Walter. He admits that he really is a German stranded in America. Jurgin Walter Koch is his birth name. Despite this reveal, the two still wish to be together. In fact, after the war, they’d like to travel to New York City and marry. LJ Ross is an internationally bestselling author, whose books have sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Recently infatuated with southern lit I just had to give Ron Rash a try. With racism, poverty & superstition & the inclusion of an ill fated love affair, slot this one as ‘contemporary southern gothic.’ Yes, it’s melancholy and slow paced at the start but so superbly written that it’s a joy to read. An escapist thriller which follows two familes who go on a tropical island getaway together for the weekend. Only nothing at the serene resort is as it seems, when one of the couples marriage reaches breaking point and tension rises between the locals, someone is going to end up hurt. Chauncey Feith goes to the Turkey Trot to drink with war veterans and send his well wishes to Boyce Clayton, the uncle of a hospitalized soldier, Paul Clayton. Chauncey recruited Paul and has a fondness for him. Chauncey is not well liked by any veterans in town, because he is only a recruiter and has never fought in any war. Chauncey takes two young boys to the Mars Hill library to look for books written in German that might be "aiding the enemy."

Cons: While most of the characters are well fleshed out the villainous Chancey Feith is a one dimensional caricature, bit of a bore. As far as plot goes it’s not particularly fresh, and it is a bit predictable.

LJ Ross has yet again threaded a gorgeously atmospheric mystery, where the strings of tension are tightened as we journey throughout the story. We meet an eclectic range of characters who you can't help but enjoy sharing the fictional world with. They'll grasp you and tug you further into the storyline! I loved the coastal location, the beautiful Cove that could also be deathly. The contrast between London and Cornwall felt like a reflection between Gabi's traumatic states as she tries to heal.

In May 2021, Louise was shortlisted for the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association ‘Dagger in the Library’ award, which recognises an author’s entire body of work having been consistently enjoyed by library borrowers around the United Kingdom, and an author’s longstanding support of libraries. Deep in the rugged Appalachians of North Carolina lies the cove, a dark, forbidding place where spirits and fetches wander, and even the light fears to travel. Or so the townsfolk of Mars Hill believe - just as they know that Laurel Shelton, the lonely young woman who lives within its shadows, is a witch. Alone except for her brother, Hank, newly returned from the trenches of France, she aches for her life to begin. I am a huge fan of this author’s DCI Ryan series, so it was a delight to learn she was starting a new series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I don’t have a real feel for what the series will be like. For instance – in the DCI Ryan series, I know that Ryan and his crew will be solving a crime in each book. I’m not sure that is the case with this series because the author wrapped up all of the loose ends and futures of all the main and subordinate characters in the epilogue. Future books in the series could certainly feature our main characters and the beautiful cove where they live, but the way this one wrapped up makes me wonder. Perhaps we’ll have a series comprised of mysteries taking place in various summer vacation spots and featuring different protagonists each time. It will be interesting to see. This is my first Alice Clark-Platts book I have read but it certainly won't be the last as I simply adored the flawless writing, the great story structure and especially the length of the chapters which were all so well rounded and made the plot very easy to follow. The descriptions were so vivid and evocative that I really did feel I was on that island, I could see all the scenes so clearly and almost felt that sugary white sand in between my toes.Due to Coronavirus (COVID-19), this property is taking steps to help protect the safety of guests and staff. Certain services and amenities may be reduced or unavailable as a result. The couples have not been friends long and they are starting to realise they don't really know each other at all. one word: lusitania.that's all. that scene broke my heart and i would have loved more moments like that throughout this fine, but not emotionally jarring, novel. Disclaimer: Jonathan Ball Publishers SA kindly sent me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. There is a tension at the resort with relations between the hotel and the locals threatening to spill over into violence, also the awkward atmosphere between the families, could threaten the tranquilly of their break and their marriages.

And, like, don't get me wrong, it's FINE. But so much of the story was caught up in marriage drama and women in their late 30s bemoaning their lives as wives and mothers and, like, cannot relate AT ALL. Two days after their arrival a monsoon threatens to hit the island, and one of their party has gone missing. The tensions that were slowly simmering come straight to the surface, and it becomes very obvious that something is not quite right at Turtle Cove. There seems to be a lot of animosity between the resort's staff and the island's locals. The rising storm is making it difficult to search for the missing person, and it also means that no one can travel to and from the island. When a body is eventually found their paradise getaway turns into a tropical nightmare overnight. Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):

I am new to this author’s writing, she tells the story shift from character to character between the different chapters, allowing you to get to know each one. As you read you are given each character’s thoughts this adds to the intrigue as you watch how they do not say what they are thinking. I enjoyed the setting and the twists in this story and would love to read more of this author's work. (Another book or two has been added to my wish list.) The luxury resort is surrounded by the sea and the dense beauty of the jungle. It is the perfect place to forget about the stresses of life and work, also included is childcare ... what more could you want?

The characters were pretty one-dimensional. Even when Coulter tried to develop some of them, the transformation came across flatly. I am a person that enjoys reading History, Military History, and other works within history such as Biographies. This book provided for me a terrific escape from my normal genre of book I like to read and the story here on Catherine Coulters first book was nothing short of thrilling. She kept me interested throughout and the surprise for me was the ending. I had no idea that she would change the outcome from the direction I thought she was taking. Either way I will be looking forward to reading more of her works in the future as I sometimes have to step away from history. A friend recommended this author to me after I finished a book on the Korean War and needed a break; I am glad that she did and I am now a fan of Coulter's to some small degree of interest on the books she writes and/or has written. I will follow the path and as I have now read book one, at my next needed break I will read book two. Over thirty years earlier at the end of World War I, Laurel and her brother Hank, a veteran missing a hand, were living at the cove. With the shadow of a cliff looming over the cabin and dark woods, the cove is a dark, sinister place. The townspeople in the insular community are superstitious, and gossip that Laurel is cursed by her port wine birthmark. Many consider her to be a witch and shun the young woman. Laurel discovers a seriously ill, mute young man in the woods and brings Walter home to recover. He's a musician who communicates beauty and his feelings when he plays the flute. He's also a man with a secret. Lou, Adam, Eliza and Noah, along with their children have arrived at Turtle Cove Resort in Pulau Kalah for a long weekend. But Walter harbors a secret that could destroy everything - and danger is closer than they know. Though the war in Europe is near its end, patriotic fervor flourishes thanks to the likes of Chauncey Feith, an ambitious young army recruiter who stokes fear and outrage throughout the county. In a time of uncertainty, when fear and ignorance reign, Laurel and Walter will discover that love may not be enough to protect them.another quietly wonderful book from ron rash, about a couple of outcasts trying to grab a little happiness out of a life filled with loss and loneliness. Turtle Cove is a beautiful Malaysian island resort. Adam and his wife, Lou, travel there with their two young children and new friends, Eliza and Noah. First impressions are wondrous and people feel relaxed…but before too long strange events are taking place and there’s evident tension. The gorgeous setting of Cornwall was wonderful to read in this story. As beautiful as it it, the author shows how the sea and changing weather can make this beautiful part of the country suddenly become dangerous. I didn't realize that L.J. Ross was starting a new series this year and I was so happy by this surprise! Engagingly told, this was a nice addition to the books already published by this author. While hardly a police procedural, it did have the right amount of mystery for a work of women's fiction. So if you're in the market for a story about something that could easily happen to any of us a tragic incident resulting in psychological issues that also includes a touch of mystery, give this book a whirl. I liked the super small town feel of the community, and the relationship that the heroine had with her boss and landlady was lovely. My only complaint is that it could've been longer and the ending felt very rushed.
