About this deal

The National Literacy Trust was commissioned by World Book Day to evaluate the impact of the initiative on the reading lives of children aged 8 to 11 in the UK. Great for World Book Day, but also full of inspiration to support reading for pleasure throughout the year. For more information about the types of cookies we use, and to manage your preferences, visit our Cookies policy here. With our partners, World Book Day, The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education, and The Open University we ran a webinar for teachers on how to engage parents with reading for pleasure behaviours. The occasional breaks in the story as Dave and Skipper converse back and forth in speech bubbles is cleverly done and the evolution of their plan to expel Mean Cat resulting in lots of revisions and crossings out is another clever additional to the book.

We want to make sure no child is left out of World Book Day, and understand that that families may be under significant financial and time pressures. A hilarious debut for 6+ readers with black and white illustrations by the superbly talented Sheena Dempsey. Her first published book, Dave Pigeon, illustrated by Sheena Dempsey, received rave reviews and went on to win three regional awards in the UK and was shortlisted for the prestigious Sainsbury's Children's Book Award. Dave Pigeon needs his wing fixed, so it’s off to Pawsville Pets for him and Skipper, who’s just going to keep him company (and type up their adventure, as usual).

Some of the funniest books around are children's books, so you're in for a treat with these favourites below. Serendipity Reviews'Readers will love it as it is full of daring and bravery, and much backfiring of ridiculous schemes and much crossing out. Swapna Haddow has devised an original new character in Dave Pigeon, who’s not the cleverest at working out plans, and the dialogue between Dave and Skipper is very funny. It provides a fantastic opportunity to focus on reading for pleasure, supporting children's autonomy in book choice, and embedding a habit of reading that brings a wide range of benefits.

Drawing on the six elements that we know support children to read for pleasure, we developed this collection of fun ideas that champion both providing pupils with choice, and giving them a voice, as they progress in their reading journey. Having tried medical school and writing for The Royal Drawing School, she was gently pushed by colleagues and her husband into writing for children. Sharing stories is a great way to enjoy time together as a family, and help children build a love of reading for pleasure.

We're hugely excited to have worked with our friends at World Book Day, the charity whose mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Read on to discover new, free resources to help bring the excitement of World Book Day and the pleasure of reading to your classroom.
