About this deal

Dodger is partly Jack Dawkins, the Artful Dodger from “Oliver Twist”, with his sharp instincts and knowledge of the underworld. It is not long before Dodger realises that although his new friends are gentlemen, they are also “geezers”, and he admits to himself that they deserve respect for their acuity (and in Mister Charlie’s case, for his ingenuity, although to Dodger's mind he does have some annoying habits, like scribbling things down on bits of paper).

We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there? Dodger is steeped in Dickensian London, both in its foggy, grimy setting, its traditions and slang, and the lives of its inhabitants. Dodger takes place in London during the reign of Queen Victoria, focusing on a time when the majority of inhabitants were poverty stricken. The irresistibly goodhearted smelly rogue, Dodger (with his equally smelly dog, Onan) bumps into Mister Charlie, and both recognise the other for what they are, and know that nothing will get past them. Terry Pratchett, best known for his long-running science fiction series Discworld, takes on a new type of fantasy with his 2012 novel, Dodger.

Being set in London at the time that it was, there was, of course, some crude comments and innuendo, though not overly so. Author Terry Pratchett employs a narrative voice that's perfectly pitched to the material and which offers many sly pleasures. With his new status, he can arrange meetings with top-tier politicians that might be able to save Simplicity. In all, he was the author of over fifty bestselling books which have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Photograph: Dominic Lipinski/PA Photo Terry Pratchett … Dodger is 'an ebullient, funny and delightful novel'.

These incidents turn Dodger into a celebrity, which helps him gather information, but also make it impossible for him to stay anonymous. Two toffs arrive: Charlie and his friend Henry, and all three decide where to take the young lady, Dodger and Mister Charlie having agreed that Henry and his wife are the ones best placed to safeguard her life.

I got the impression that Sir Terry included people he respects and admires, and perhaps this is part of the problem: overlooking the implausibility of these gentleman all happening to take an interest in Dodger during a single week, the characters never really came to life for me. Based on the best-selling books by Julia Donaldson, the series will feature both new adventures and classic stories from the books.

When this encounter hits the newspapers, Dodger finds himself having to deal with a completely different life. It can also be viewed as an inspirational tale for children, which teaches them to, um, steal from the innocent for personal gain, vandalise the property of people who happen to be from the same country as one bad apple, and elope with a girl you hardly know - who happens to have lovely hair. First edition first printing, 2012, good-plus clean firm interior, no marks or inscriptions, contains black and white illustrations at start of each chapter, toned to page block, good clean firm boards with some slight shelf wear, all tight; bright firm d/jacket, showing only light usage, nick to lower front l. Cultivating his “historical fantasy” genre, Pratchett sneaks in historical nods here and there throughout the novel. I am also including a chapter sampler, which contains the first 14 pages of the novel, and is in New condition.
