About this deal

A few people glanced to my father whose glower was so fierce he could have passed for one of his own statues. But I'm particularly drawn to reimaginings, to stories that ask "what if" with the stories I love so much. Girl, Goddess, Queen is a thoroughly modern retelling that turns the story of Hades and Persephone completely on its head, breathing new life into the classic mythos. After tricking Hades into letting her stay in his home, she takes it upon herself to explore Hades' realm of the Underworld (without his permission) and then proceeds to suggest improvements (lol, Persephone, intrusive guest much).

I’d rather perish, rather be another tragic tale for a mother to use in warning than become a long drawn-out sigh in a hymn, an immortal life spent in misery. I didn't have the heart to hate it as I had loved some aspects of the story, but I also can't say that I fully loved it either. I seem to be in the minority with this review but I didn’t really enjoy this book and I at times, found it quite dull. The other thing I loved the most about this brilliant book, was that we got to see an author execute a perfect enemies to barely tolerate each other to friends to fake relationship to lovers character development and I was LIVING FOR IT. Cyane stays behind to tidy up but she must have been cooking before she joined us because the kitchen is steamy – worryingly so in a house made almost entirely of wood and several twisting trees – and the smell of bread is crushing in so small a space.I adored Hades and Persphone's relationship all throughout the story, was a bit different to the others I've recently read too so it was a nice change! There were parts where Persephone and Hades was just sweet but the slow-burn that I feel the author was aiming for. I wonder if her lessons will ever sink in or if they’ll forever ring through my mind in her voice, oil on water, condemning my actions without ever helping me stop doing the things that so annoy her. Rather he’s an unwitting accomplice, drawn into Persephone’s reckless scheme when she jumps into hell of her own free will.

Sometimes with fantasy, especially Greek myth, it can be easy to dive into a book and immediately lose your footing. But to her father, Zeus, a wrathful god terrified of having his power usurped, it was the worst possible answer she could have given.

The ending is bittersweet, but I won't be spoiling it ;) I read this book as part of a readalong and had so much fun discussing each chapter and sharing quotes. Different topics are dealt with which makes the reader connect to the characters on a deeper and emotional level.

Or Athena patting my head, telling me the places to hit a man to break free of him if, god forbid, one ever made it onto the island and took me away. I think that if the book didn't have too many fillers, I would actually bump the ratings to 4 stars. I’d normally be too impatient to wait for it to cool down, burning my fingers as I tear into chunks. They gather round, tell me the worst things I’ve ever heard in my life and then give me tips for staying safe.
