Thankfully, with Peter Atkins returning on scripting duties, the film does at least manage to mine some interesting material along the way, furthering the investigation into Pinhead’s origins that began with its predecessor and giving the Cenobite plenty of elegant soliloquies that help give at least an impression of some intelligence at work in the production process. But then the Pinhead’s batch of new Cenobites turn up for the film’s final act and it all goes off the rails. Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellbound – archival interview with the iconic actor about his second appearance as ‘Pinhead’ An important difference between the book and film versions — aside from the name — is that the film version of the box is merely twisted into new alignments or shapes, whereas the version in the novella is completely disassembled and reassembled. The film version is also trimmed in brass or gold, and appears to have arcane symbols etched on its surface. The novella version is completely smooth and has no obvious designs save for an almost imperceptible etching along the seams between the pieces, but seems to display the faces of its victims in the reflection of light over its surfaces. Flesh is a Trap – brand new visual essay exploring body horror and transcendence in the work of Clive Barker by genre author Guy Adams (The World House) Compared to Starz's original 2009 platter, Arrow's 1.85:1-framed 1080p encode of Hellraiser has a much more organic appearance, with far more native film grain present. Contrast and clarity also take a major step forwards in quality, helping resolve additional fine detail. Shot the following year with many of the same crew, it's hardly surprising that the 1.85:1 encode of Hellbound: Hellraiser II looks very similar.Books of Blood and Beyond: The Literary Works of Clive Barker – archival appreciation by horror author David Gatwalk of Barker’s written work, from The Books of Blood to The Scarlet Gospels Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser – brand new version of the definitive documentary on the making of Hellraiser, featuring interviews with key cast and crew members Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellraiser: (SD 12:31) Bradley discusses how he came to know Barker and getting involved with the film. Audio Commentary: This is an older commentary featuring Director Clive Barker flying solo. It's not as strong as the one he did with Ashley Laurence and Peter Atkins, but he does remain engaging throughout offering up some great details about the production. He even keeps a good humor about how "latex" some of the effects look. It took another four years for a third Hellraiser outing to materialise on the big screen and this time around the focus was squarely on lead Cenobite, Pinhead (Doug Bradley). With the franchise under new ownership following the collapse of original production company New World, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth attempts to reshape the franchise into something a little more mainstream, recasting Pinhead as a typical supernatural bogeyman.

The Story of Hellraiser III: (HD 32:01) Similar to the previous "Leviathan" entries, this is a fairly extensive making-of bonus feature, not as long, but still very thorough. Being Frank: Sean Chapman on Hellbound: (HD 11:35) This is a nice follow-up interview with the actor as he gets to discuss the short time he had to work on the second film. Newly uncovered extended Epk interviews with Clive Barker and stars Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and effects artist Bob Keen, shot during the making of Hellraiser, with a new introduction by Stephen Jones and Kim Newman The Liminal Configuration seems to be the simplest configuration to solve, as it only required a person collapsing it into itself. The interior surfaces were brilliantly polished. Frank's reflection — distorted, fragmented — skated across the lacquer.... LeMarchand, who had been in his time a maker of singing birds, had constructed the box so that opening it tripped a musical mechanism, which began to tinkle a short rondo of sublime banality. Brand new 2K restorations of Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, and Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth Hellbound: Hellraiser II expands on Barker’s original vision as screenwriter Peter Atkins takes Julia Cotton, her step daughter Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) and the sinister Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham) into the dominion of the Cenobites themselves. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth sees Pinhead set loose on the sinful streets of New York City to create chaos with a fresh cadre of Cenobitic kin. Then, Hellraiser: Bloodline sinks its hooks into past, present and future with the story of Phillip LeMarchand, the 18th-century toymaker who made the lament configuration puzzle box, his descendent John Merchant – a 20th-century architect whose most recent building bears a striking resemblance to the lament configuration – and Dr. Paul Merchant, a 22nd-century engineer and designer of The Minos, a space station which is a great deal more than it seems. The decision to aim for a bigger audience with Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth results in a significant aesthetic change, with cinematographer Gerry Lively giving the film a far glossier appearance. Once again, Arrow's 1.85:1 restoration captures the new look well, with a refined grain structure and excellent shadow detail. The clarity and sharpness of the image also aids the many split-diopter shots used to give the image deeper focus. Audio Commentary: Screenwriter Peter Atkins offers up an interesting and engaging commentary. It's interesting to hear about the ideas he had for the film and its slim link to the second film and how Julia as the Queen of Hell would have been the ongoing baddie of the series if Pinhead hadn't been so iconic.
